Serial Port Monitor

Serial Port Analyzer is a professional utility that allows monitoring RS232/422/485 ports activity. Serial Port Monitor also displays, logs, and analyzes all data flows among COM ports and can send data in various formats, thus working as a terminal.

This Serial Port Monitor is mainly intended for those who develop and debug software and hardware serial port solutions. More than that this application provides you with friendly and comprehensive interface.

Serial Port Monitor is fully compatible with Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit).

Common problem

You need to log all port activity and analyze the specific data from a generic data flow.

How Serial Port Monitor solves it

Serial Monitor connects to a COM port and starts monitoring all of its activity. Now all data going out of the port will be displayed in the application in real time. Moreover, it can send the data to a specific file or copy all data to the clipboard. Serial Monitor allows connecting to an already open port.

Serial Port Monitor also records all serial input/output control codes (IOCTLs), displaying their full details and parameters. Any monitoring session can be saved and loaded whenever you need it.

The advanced software supports all COM-port types: standard on-board ports, extension board ports, software-based virtual COM ports, Bluetooth serial ports, USB to SERIAL cradles, etc.

General tasks and our solutions

View and filter monitored data

With Serial Port Monitor you can set the monitoring filters up to your convenience and track only particular events. All standard serial I/O Control requests and other major functions including IRP are supported. IOCTLs and IRPs can be filtered in RS232 Port Monitor. There are several view types available: table, line, dump, or terminal.

Monitor multiple COM ports

Serial Port Monitor allows you to monitor a few ports at the same time, i.e. their interaction with a few apps and devices within one session. To make the analysis easier, this information is recorded in a single log on first-in-first-out basis.

Analyze serial port activity

Serial Port Analyzer can track, log, and display all serial port activity in the system. All data flowing through the port that is being monitored is conveniently displayed to you. With the advanced filtering option you can focus your efforts just on relevant data.

Emulate data exchange

Serial Port Analyzer allows sending various data (string, binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal) to a monitored port as if from a certain application. You can see and analyze the reaction of the device you monitor to the commands you send. You can modify COM port settings on-the-fly: stopbits, flow control, parity control, data bits, etc.

Analyze Modbus RTU and ASCII data

Serial Monitor employs new, effective filters allowing you to read and analyze Modbus data. With this application, you can easily monitor and analyze the activity of Modbus ASCII and RTU protocols.

Playback and session comparison

Using the session playback feature in Serial Monitor lets you resend data transmitted between your application and a serial port. You can obtain more precise monitoring by reviewing a port’s behavior as it receives the same data. Comparison between sessions is also possible and differences are automatically displayed.

Serial Port Monitor can be used by individuals in
many fields such as:

  • serial device developers and testers

  • OEM engineers and developers

  • teams responsible for quality control

  • serial software programmers

  • designers of SCADA and industrial automation systems

  • system integrators

  • maintenance and service technicians

Some of the tasks that Serial Port Monitor can be
used for include:

  • implementing, debugging and reverse-engineering devices and applications that use serial protocols

  • software and hardware testing

  • troubleshooting connections between computers and serial peripheral devices such as scanners, modems, and lab equipment

  • debugging serial (RS232/422/485) data communication issues affecting devices and control networks

  • hardware development involving serial interfaces

  • device driver development

  • enabling communication with any equipment or applications over an RS232/RS422/RS485 interface

  • monitoring, sending, and logging data traveling through serial connections in binary, ASCII or HEX
